1. Background
Thailand presented its first national report on the humanrights situation in the country at the 12th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group. The report was adopted at the 19th Session of the HumanRights Council (HRC) in March 2012. Thailand received a total of 172 recommendations, 134 of which have been accepted in whole or in part. In addition, Thailand also made 8 voluntary pledges on the promotion and protection of humanrights.

... stakeholders and led the crucial exercise of reviewing the Council’s work. The country not only strengthened the rights of vulnerable groups -- through the support of the first resolution on sexual orientation and gender identity and bringing to the HRC’s attention the situation of women in prisons -- but also initiated a resolution to build common ground on the value of technical cooperation in enhancing humanrights at the national level.
The development of the Council’s more assertive and effective approach to dealing with humanrights crises took place almost in parallel to the Arab Spring – the wave of pro-democracy demonstrations that began in Tunisia ...
